All Electronic Medical Records have historically suffered from mediocre to poor usability. Physicians around the country are paying the price. This is a chance for users, developers, CEO's, and other stakeholders to understand and share their usability perspectives. February 2010.
Update: Things are getting better in the US EMR usability realm. So much so that I bought a new domain name: FewerTaps.com. July 2010

HIMSS Virtual Conference Keynote slides
I did a closing keynote presentation for HIMSS Virtual Conference today on EMR Usability. Here are the visuals, without my soothing voice.
Hi Jeff, I really enjoyed your presentation at the virtual conference.
We think that usability is important, and that clinicians need to have a way to communicate their feedback about EHR usability. Oh, and by the way, it should be free:
I just listened to a recording of your presentation. Great job raising awareness about usability and good luck on the policy front.
I noticed that your criteria @ http://bit.ly/shopEMR didn't include any mention of workflow around selecting and fulfilling patient education or after visit summaries. I wonder if you could include a scenario in the test suite so that buyers can be sure to get systems that support this important function. I note this because "meanigful use" certainly does address the requirement of being able to distribute information that helps patients and families understand their care so they can comply with the treatment they have chosen with their physicians. Better outcomes, etc.
Thanks for the great work. You are a hero among my health UX friends.
Hi Dev, Thanks for the suggestion. I plan to meet next month with some folks involved with CCHIT's usability testing protocols. I'll pass along your excellent suggestion. I'm also working on a presentation for HIMSS 2010 in Atlanta. I'll be adressing how usability affects a number of meaningful use criteria. Your suggestion will help out there as well.
And, we'll add a bit to the bit.ly page you referenced.
Your slides were right on. I and my company are interested in these exact issues. Additionally, we want to make sure that the notion of "design" and a formal design process doesn't get forgotten in the rush to simply measure "usability" a la the HIMSS white paper. You've touched on some of these issues and I touch on several more in my paper. I would be happy if you would take a look and let me know what you think. Thanks.
